Is Your Kids' Diet Too Low In Fat?

I have a friend, rather she's the mother of one of Lily's playmates, that has severe food issues. She's constantly dieting, binging, fasting and generally driving herself (and everyone around her) to madness with her low fat food obsession.

I never heard someone read a Snickers bar label with such zeal before. Okay, Snickers is about 280 calories a bar but my favorite granola bar (supposedly packed with protein) is 320 calories. From now on, I think I'm going to enjoy a Snickers before my workout. And it's a scientific fact, Snickers keeps your hunger away.

She's not a small woman either nor is her husband who is at least 6'2" tall. She's just one or two inches shorter than me and I'm 5'8". Yet her children are tiny! They're more than petite they're Lilliputian. I have seen her on more than one occasion take food that she considered fatty like pizza out of her children's mouths. Only to see her two minutes later, stuffing her face with the very same pizza she took from them! It's soooo disturbing.

I've gently tried to suggest to her that kids need more fat than we do in their diet because their metabolism is higher than ours and they need food energy to grow. I also said that just because we're dieting our children shouldn't be on one. Only, to have my head bitten clear off. (She would have eaten it only it was too high in fat.) I hate everybody.

So this brings up another issue too.....what do you do when you hate the parents of your children’s' friends?? My father still claims (imagine with a thick Hungarian, Dracula sounding accent), "It's not de kids Sherry, it's the parents I hate!" So based on my new found hatred of this woman, remember this is a comedy blog I'm not Deepak Chopra, I jumped down her throat when we were in the park on Sunday (before she could shove the food down it) when I saw her take cookies (which were Organic Newman’s Own Oreos that I brought!) away from her daughter.

I gave her a copy of the Reuters article on the topic of kids and low fat diets (I was armed for an argument). I agreed with her that yes, kids today eat too much junk food but that moderation was key in everything......however, moderation is something this woman clearly doesn't understand. Unfortunately, I have to listen to her when our kids are playing and each conversation is chock full of her dysfunctional life and marriage. I think I'm going to feign sudden deafness from now on. It's a shame really because Lily just adores her daughter. I don't want to stand in the way of their friendship but Oi Vey already!!!

She thinks I'm strange because I play with the kids on the swings and on the slide but I'll do anything to get away from her. She always jokes, "Oh Sherry, you're such a kid at heart." Meanwhile, I'm thinking the word of the day is avoidance! And when she's not looking I slip her kids some bacon. From now on, I'm going to do a shot of something before our play dates.....maybe Bailey's....that's high in fat and alcohol.

I don't think she thinks you're strange, Sherry. I think she thinks you're nosy, rude, judgmental and a distinctly UNfunny PITA. A highfat, deeply unappealing one filled with anger and pettiness that you try to pass off as comedy. If you want to have some sort of mommier-than-thou parenting blog, have at it. But don't keep trying to justify it as comedy, because the way you attack other parents isn't funny, it's pathetic.

Posted by Kimberly on September 05 at 08:48am

Bullshit Kimberly!! That woman needs to be attacked repeatedly! Self absorbed moms who pass their eating disoders on to their kids? Had an old neighbor who ran her house like a boot camp. Screamed, berated, controlled or thought she did (found out can't control how your kids feel about you) when it was time to come home from their dads they decided to stay and told their dad about the abusive behavior so social services got involved. and you guessed it she lost her kids.People you can't push your adult problems on children. They can't handle it ! So I guess to answer your question Sherry find a tv show in common, music, books the weather those are safe subjects. I have a mom that will lie about what goes on in my house because she is such a miserable bitch. But the kid still comes over because it makes my son happy. He hasn't picked up on the habitual lieing yet and until that happens he is more than welcome. As for her....just waiting for a little alone time THEN we WILL have a chat about the lieing. Can't wait!!!

"hat woman needs to be attacked repeatedly! "

Wow. Just...wow. So glad you all know exactly how to parent everyone else's children. You're certainly not what's wrong with the pack mentality of mothers today, out to vilify anyone who does things differently and force them to conform to your standards so that you can congratulate yourselves on your excellent parenting, nosiree.

You know what, you get to disagree with the way other people parent their children. And if it's actually abusive, you have an obligation to step in. Beyond that, unless you are actually asked for your advice, you should just STFU and maybe think about how much you would welcome being "attacked repeatedly" because someone disagrees with your parenting. Oh, right, you're perfect, and so is Sherry, which is why every other mother in Brooklyn is apparently fair game for her judgment.

I've left the url up because I think anonymous comments are cowardly, not to encourage traffic. Please, stay where you are, because I really don't want

Posted by Kimberly on September 05 at 10:17am

Yeah, your right Kimberly that was way too harsh what I said it is just that it's SO frustrating to watch. You know blogs like this kind of keep us sane.. You can bark at the moon then go to the bus stop a little calmer.Thats all, just blowing off steam.By no means am I perfect or close to it but to see people push their disorders on their kids it is heartbreaking.Anyway sorry if I upset you like I said just barking at the moon.

"That woman needs to be attacked repeatedly!"

I thought this blog was supposed to be funny. Is it supposed to be funny or is it supposed to be a venue for attacking other mothers? I've never seen it be the former and consistently seen it as the latter. I guess that's fine if that's the kind of thing someone wants to put out there but iVillage needs to change the name to reflect its content.

Posted by Eden on September 05 at 11:06am

You know what Becky? I have a lot of respect for a woman who can eat a little crow.

I agree, we all need to vent sometimes. It's hard to be a parent, and it is hard to keep your mouth shut sometimes--hence the need to vent.

But honestly, I don't find what Sherry does to be venting. I find her to be self-congratulatory in her judgment of other mothers, and to defend her vicious bile as "comedy." It's not. If she took responsibility, I think I'd still find her not to my taste, but possibly not utterly repugnant.

Posted by Kimberly on September 05 at 11:09am

Kimberly,

If I didn't think others were entitled to their opinions I'd have all yours deleted. Obviously, I enjoy your feedback. At least you're reading. You may not have much of a sense of humor and overly-identify with the subject matter but that's okay too. Please don't attack the other readers' comments though, those remarks in future I will delete. Your comments were quite bullying.

Thanks for all the comments from everyone. Beckey seems to understand the spirit of the blog being a vent and not using anyone's last names it's just that.

PS - Kimberly, I'm not the person who wrote, "The woman needs to be attacked constantly." It would be nice if everyone was more thorough in their reading.

Sherry, you're right. Thanks.

Posted by Kimberly on September 05 at 05:46pm

My, that's hilarious. Posting that comment and adding my url. You are just too funny Sherry.

And in violation of the iVillage TOS, which are a part of your contract. I think I shall complain. And then blog about it.

Posted by Kimberly on September 05 at 10:13pm

Oh, and I replied at MY site, just to make sure my thoughts didn't get lost in the translation this time.

Posted by Kimberly on September 05 at 10:38pm

Ok. This sucks .returning to the crime scene that I caused. Listen..When I read that this woman pulled food out of this child's mouth made me crazy angry. I was an abused child . As a parent I think you take 1 of 2 roads.. the same or the highly sensitive where you see a white light whenever you suspect abuse and thats what I saw ,not maybe the child had diabetes,or an allergy or maybe some constipation issue ,whatever the point being that was a STUPID thing to say and I suffered all day thinking about that and Kimberly is right we don't know exactly what goes on in peoples lives ..so maybe we should be a little more kind and open and push our own issues aside and god help us "support each other" vs you know ..me. What if we said '"Hey If you need some one to talk call me" The whole world hates us right now the last thing we should be doing is turning on each other.AGAIN I COMPLETELY SUCKED THIS MORNING AND I APPOLOGIZE.

Posted by Beckey on September 05 at 11:49pm

By the tone of this post, I thought you were dead serious and passionate about how you felt, and not trying to be funny. Having said that, passing this off as comedy is like my 8 year old mouthing off and then saying he's kidding, which is frustrating and immature at best.

As a mother with an eating disorder, I completely agree this mother should not be projecting her own eating disorder onto her children. My own mother did the same and therefore this is the path I walk.

I also agree that mothers should support each other and not judge - this pack mentality and judgmental thought process is harming not only each other, but hurting our ability in becoming confident mothers.

We have the hardest job, and yet it's the most criticized, and mostly by each other! It would do us all some good to make an effort to support one another.

I think you should make a better effort to gently guide this woman toward helpful resources, or keep your nose right out of it.

One more small bloggy thing though - deleting comments that are relevant to the post and comments is bullying - and I read Kimberly's comments and saw them as contributing to this very important discussion.

Posted by Karen Rani on September 06 at 03:32pm

I choose to not post my name.....but you know who I am....laughed so hard....then coughed...forever....hope to see you soon

This site is a lot of fun very well designed.

Posted by Nicole on September 10 at 03:47am

Hey this is funny, didn't you read the part where the mother took the "bad" food out of her kids scrawny hands and shoved it in her own mouth?!?

That is classic, do as I say not as I do. I have a co-worker that yells at me for having candy snacks for people to take from, at my desk and how I am ruining her Weight Watchers, but she walks all the way over to complain and then grabs a hand full for the trip back ...

On a serious note, Sherry, you are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT about fat intake (within reason) and kids. They (and adults) need some fat as it is what our brain and nervous system use for proper functioning (synapses and connecting). And kids USUally need more calories as they are constantly running around and burning calories. I say usually because there are kids out there with metabolism issues, but they are not skinny and small (and easier to spot).

Posted by Reality Check on September 28 at 09:47am

It's good to be aware of the balance issues -- too fat children are becoming more common and they are competing for the attention of their elders along with the anorexic. Don't make these judgments yourself. If you believe there are nutritional issues with YOUR children -- never mind your neighbor's children -- then discuss it with your doctor. If there is to be any intrusion, let it be by the teacher of a potentially problem child. They can discuss many aspects of the child's progress with a parent who may be unaware of their child's difficulties, including nutritional.

Posted by A Key on December 21 at 12:35pm

TOTALLY agree!! couldn't have said it better!! What a bit*h, jeez, I'd be hanging upside down from the monkey bars, too just to get away from the child deprivator!! At least they don't suck the ink out of markers!!
